Life changing choices

Some choices adjust a life. Others change it completely. In conversation with a man I look up to, we discussed four such choices, each of which change the course of one's life.

“There are four choices that determine the course and well-being of our lives.” Dr Mark J Lamberti

  1. Religion
  2. The skill we development
  3. The person we marry
  4. Where we live.

Making Choices

I recently finished reading Of Mice and Men, by John Steinbeck. The title was inspired by a poem titled To a Mouse by Robert Burns, written in 1785. It reads:

Thou saw the fields laid bare an’ waste,
An’ weary Winter comin fast,
An’ cozie here, beneath the blast,
Thou thought to dwell,
Till crash! the cruel coulter past
Out thro’ thy cell.

Well, I asked Chat GPT to modernise it…

You saw the fields exposed and desolate,
And the tired winter approaching rapidly,
Seeking refuge here, sheltered from the gust,
You hoped to dwell,
Until crash! The ruthless ploughshare passed
Right through your home.

We get involved and dwell in people and things. Then comes the ploughshare. At this point, it is best take time off—to let the rough waters clear up. Some people go for long walks, others go on holiday, and some of us cycled from Musina to Cape Town. Do what you must before wrestling with these four choices.

  1. Change your religion
  2. or, change the skill you develop
  3. or, change the person to whom you are married
  4. or, change where you live.

All of the above, changed separately, are life-changing. More so together.
