These are two of the most misleading social inventions we have created as human beings.
Most business people who have built anything worthwhile often talk about doing what you love, which leads to making money. But chasing money directly leads to all sorts of corruptions of the soul.
Scientists who study social hierarchies have a similar view. Alpha males in chimpanzees tribes maintain their status with social intelligence. In other words, they create an environment where the other members feel safe and willing to contribute to the tribe. On the other hand, tyrannical alpha males always attract enemies and get killed by the younger, often much stronger, chimps.
So there it is. Money and Power. If you chase them directly, you chaise your demise. But if you focus on making other people’s lives better, you ultimately become wealthy and powerful.
